The History of Nittany Oil Company
Nittany Oil Company was started in 1958 by Galen Dreibelbis, an aggressive individual seeking to create a customer oriented and reliable heating oil and gasoline supplier in the State College area.
During 1962, George Martin, along with his son, Jim, started business in Blair County, incorporated as George O. Martin and Sons, Inc. Tom Martin joined his father and brother in 1967 and Fred Martin starting with the company in 1971. The company aggressively sought new business and by 1976 had sales in excess of 6 Million dollars. The Company began as a Tide Water Oil distributorship, however in 1968 the Tide Water Oil (Flying A) was dropped and the company became a Mobil distributor.
The corporate name was changed to Martin Oil Company in 1978. Martin Oil Company purchased Nittany Oil Company in 1980 and became extremely active in Centre and Mifflin Counties. The popular Central PA “Nittany” name was retained.
Martin Oil Company purchased Pritchard Oil Company, a Gulf Distributorship in Philipsburg, in 1985. This distributorship continues to service all of Western Centre County, Clearfield and Jefferson Counties.
Through a mutual agreement, Martin Oil Company and Nittany Oil Company separated in 1991 and Jim Martin became the sole stock holder of the company which had grown substantially in Centre, Mifflin, and Clearfield Counties.
In January 2003, Nittany Oil Company purchased K.V. Oil Company of Mifflin County with the main office in Belleville, PA, and Hilltop Oil Company of Juniata County located in Mifflintown, PA. These major acquisitions over the years have developed Nittany Oil Company into one of the largest and most aggressive heating oil and gasoline distributorships in Central PA.
Nittany Oil's growth in Central PA is also attributed to the professionals who have been working for many years. All five Board of Directors began their careers in the oil industry in their late teens and have continued to grow with the company. Each plays a vital role in the growth and daily operations of the company.
Starting from a very small distributorship with sales of less than 200,000 gallons annually, Nittany Oil Company has grown into one of the largest heating oil and gasoline distributorships in Central PA. Currently with over 20,000 home heating oil customers and approximately 75 dealers, Nittany Oil's mission and dedication to excellent customer service has allowed them to continue to grow and expand during this 45 year period.
